Selling Your Car for Export from Switzerland: When It Makes Sense and How It Works
Many cars that barely attract interest on the Swiss second-hand market are still in demand abroad. The reason is simple: other markets apply different standards for age, mileage and repair costs. If you own an older car in Eastern Switzerland, a vehicle with defects or an accident-damaged car, export is worth considering – provided you know how the process works.
Which cars are interesting for export
Export buyers judge a car differently from a Swiss private buyer. Paintwork, interior and equipment details matter less; robust mechanics and spare-part availability in the destination market matter more. Typically in demand:
- widely sold models with simple, well-known technology
- high-mileage vehicles – 250'000 km is no exclusion criterion in many markets
- cars without a valid MFK (the periodic Swiss roadworthiness inspection) or with expensive but repairable faults
- accident vehicles whose drivetrain and body structure are still usable
- all-wheel-drive cars, estates and light commercial vehicles in solid condition
Especially where a repair in Switzerland would cost more than the car is worth afterwards, export is often the only route that still produces a sale price at all.
What reduces the export value
| Factor | Effect on price |
|---|---|
| Rust on load-bearing parts | Strongly negative – the structure cannot be repaired economically |
| Engine or gearbox damage | Negative, but rarely a deal-breaker – the rest of the car decides |
| Complex electronics, rare equipment | Negative if diagnostics and parts are unavailable in the destination market |
| Missing documents or only one key | Delays or prevents registration abroad |
| Long period standing unused | Brakes, tyres, battery and seals suffer – extra work for the buyer |
Conversely, a complete service book, a set of winter wheels or a recent timing-belt service also help in an export sale, because they document the real condition.
The process step by step
- Provide details and photos: make, model, first registration, mileage, known damage, date of the last MFK.
- Offer and inspection: a serious estimate is confirmed on site or on the basis of complete information – not revised downwards afterwards.
- Written contract: stating clearly that the car is sold for export.
- Payment: in full before or at handover.
- Deregistration and collection: only then does the vehicle leave your place.
Deregistration, plates and insurance
A car leaving Switzerland is deregistered beforehand at the Strassenverkehrsamt, the cantonal road traffic office. The licence plates stay with you or are handed back to the office. For transport across the border the buyer uses his own solution – transport plates, temporary permits or a trailer. Never let your car be driven away on your own plates: as long as the plates are registered to you, your insurance, your road tax and your liability for fines continue to run. Which papers are kept by the office and what you receive for the export varies between cantons – if in doubt, ask your cantonal Strassenverkehrsamt directly. Customs formalities at the border are the buyer's responsibility.
The sales contract for an export sale
Record in writing: both parties with addresses, the vehicle identification number, mileage, date, price, method of payment and every known defect. Add that the car is sold for export, in its current condition and with any warranty excluded. That wording protects you from later claims – but only if you genuinely disclosed the known damage. Keep a signed copy and photograph the vehicle at handover.
Warning signs with buyers
- The car is to be collected before payment is complete.
- You are asked to leave the plates on "just for the trip".
- The price suddenly drops at collection without any new finding.
- There is no written contract and no verifiable business address.
